Barra is a lovely little town, situated on the southern area of Costa Alegre. It has a long curving beach extending the full length of the town towards neighboring Melaque. The streets are paved with cobblestones and bricks and many are sectioned off for pedestrian only. There are numerous hotels, restaurants and small shops.

Melaque Real Estate

Melaque, San Patricio, and Villa Obregon are the three adjacent beachfront villages that make up the community referred to on this web page as Melaque. The village of Melaque is at the western end of Bahía de Navidad and has been a vacation retreat for generations of Mexicans. San Patricio is a 1/2-mile strip in the middle of the three villages and contains the town square and most of the retail shops. Villa Obregon is the easternmost of the three villages and is more residential in character. The three villages form the largest coastal community between Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo. Melaque is located only 2 miles northwest of Barra de Navidad and shares the same long curving beach.

La Manzanilla is a small fishing village (2000 residents), just south of Boca de Iguanas, actually on the same beach. The beach is lined with palm thatched restaurants serving up a variety of fresh seafood. The waves are generally calm and make for good swimming. The town is surrounded by palm and fruit trees and is situated on the shore of a great mangrove swamp that provides life to a great variety of crocodiles, birds and fish.

Boca de Iguana is a 6 mile stretch of beach along the tranquil inner recess of the Bay of Tenacatita. An old former beachfront hotel, Hotel Bahía Tenacatita, has been reclaimed by the jungle and the animals that live in the nearby mangrove marsh. The beach, however, is as enjoyable as ever;: wide and level, with firm white sand good for hiking, jogging, and beach-combing. Offshore, the gently rolling waves are equally fine for bodysurfing and boogie boarding. Beds of oysters, free for those who dive for them, lie a few hundred feet offshore. A rocky outcropping at the north end invites snorkeling while the calm water beyond the breakers invites sail-boarding.

The small village of Tenacatita is popular with locals, as well as visitors and the town beach has a number of rustic seafood restaurants and assorted beach vendors. The rocky coves between the Blue Bay and Tenacatita, and on both sides of Tenacatita itself, provide excellent snorkeling. Tenacatita visitors enjoy three distinct beaches: the main one, Playa Tenacatita; the little one, Playa Mora; and Playa la Boca, a beautiful, pristine beach just over three km north to the boca (mouth) of the Río Purificación. Playa Tenacatita’s white sand curves from the north end of Punta Tenacatita a to Punta Hermanos, a total of about two miles.

El Tecuan Real Estate

The 900 hectare (2200 acre) property of El Tecuan was given by a former Mexican president to a chief military general in Mexico for services to his country many years ago. The general had an elaborate plan to build a “Marina Resort”. He built a hotel, swimming pool, tennis court and airplane landing strip but died before he could finish the resort. The remaining family members had no interest in completing the project and completely it down down after leasing the hotel portion out for a few short years. The hotel is now completely abandoned and run down. El Tecuan has nearly 3 miles of ocean front, backed by a 195 acre (80 hectare) estuary lagoon. The beaches and lagoon are excellent for reptile and bird-watching, fishing and hiking. The beach has some good surfing breaks and excellent surf fishing. Swimmers need to exercise caution.
